Every Family has a Story – Welcome to ours!

The name Hartenberg comes from the Afrikaans language and means “heart of the mountain”

The wine farm is situated in the Stellenbosch region, about 54 km east from Cape Town. A total of 150 hectares and two third under vine. Nine different soil types and very different micro climatic conditions make the wines so special. Each grape variety gets theperfect location.

A mere forty years after the colourful Cape Colony was founded in 1652, Hartenberg Wine Estate was established – imagine that! It was in 1692 when the first grapes were planted on our farm – destined to become a highly revered producer in the picturesque Stellenbosch Wine Route.

Right from the start of our story, firm family values and barrels of passion lace the chapters generously. Our most momentous era begins on 1 January 1987 with the inimitable Ken Mackenzie and his aspiration to fly Hartenberg high.

Carl Schultz is since 1993 the cellar master and under his guidance Hartenberg Estate became one of the leading wine estates in South Africa. With the Shiraz Stork 2008 Hartenberg won the competition Syrah du Monde 2012 in France. For the Merlot 2005 Carl Schultz received the “Winemaker of the Year” award
